How to choose a used laptop: a checklist that actually matters

Processor generation, RAM, SSD health and battery wear tell you far more than the word “clean”. Here’s what to check, in order.

A used laptop can be the best value in tech, or an expensive mistake. The difference is usually a handful of facts the seller should be able to tell you. Here’s the order we check them in.

1. Start with what you’ll use it for

Office work, browsing and video calls run well on almost any business laptop from the last six years. Photo editing, programming with many tools open, or light gaming need more memory and a newer processor.

  • Everyday and office use: 8 GB RAM, any SSD, Intel 8th-gen Core i5 or newer, or Apple M1.
  • Heavier multitasking: 16 GB RAM and 512 GB storage.

2. Insist on an SSD, and ask about its health

A solid-state drive is the single biggest factor in how fast a laptop feels. SSDs wear slowly, and the remaining life can be read with a SMART check. We put that figure on every listing, for example “97% remaining life”.

3. Read battery health as a number

“Battery is fine” isn’t information. Battery health is a percentage of the original capacity, plus a cycle count. Above 80% is good for a used machine. Below 70%, plan to replace the battery or stay near a socket.

4. Decide how much wear you can live with

Scratches on the lid don’t affect performance, and they can save you a lot. That’s why our grades describe appearance only. See the condition guide for what each grade means.

5. Look for what was not tested

An honest listing tells you what wasn’t checked. A fingerprint reader without drivers, or a smart-card slot nobody uses, might not matter to you, but you should know before paying.

6. Check the charger

A missing or third-party charger is common. It’s fine if the listing says so, and the wattage is right for the laptop.
